About us

"A complex knee, shoulder or ankle injury incurred by a professional or recreational athlete is still a complex knee, shoulder or ankle injury regardless of where and how it happened. It is our strong belief that these kind achieve better outcomes when they are assessed and treated by a specialist orthopaedic surgeon, rather than a general sports injury surgeon."

  • Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeons
  • Knee, shoulder, spine, hip, foot & ankle and upper limb
  • Extensive experience in treating complex injuries
  • Tailor made treatment for professional/ recreational athletes
  • Education programme for related Health Professionals

In recent years, orthopaedic surgeons have increasingly subscribed to a subspecialty model of patient care. This approach allows surgeons to specialise in a specific joint area – the knee, shoulder, hip, back or foot and ankle. It is now recognised that outcomes after surgery are statistically better when the surgeons have extensive experience and perform a high volume of surgery, supporting the subspecialty model of care.

The Glasgow Sports Surgery Service (GSSS) endorses this subspecialty model and has established a team of orthopaedic consultant surgeons each specialising in a specific joint area. In addition to having a subspecialism in a single joint, each of the GSSS surgeons also has an interest and experience in sports injuries and understands the issues involved for both recreational and professional athletes.

The GSSS surgeons see and treat significant numbers of Scotland’s most complex injuries in their specialist field – in both their NHS practices and in the private sector. All GSSS consultants receive tertiary referrals from across Scotland.

The GSSS is committed to developing and implementing a programme of education for physiotherapists, general practitioners, sports physicians and team doctors.
